The Climate Media Barometer: Tracking Climate Misinformation in Flemish Media

This capstone project is motivated by a striking gap in the Flemish media landscape: the absence of any regulatory framework around climate misinformation, and a lack of systematic insight into how climate change is covered and framed across broadcasters. Grounded in inoculation theory, transparency-accountability theory, and framing theory, the team developed a rigorous analytical approach to map the prevalence and nature of climate reporting across both public and commercial channels. Their data analysis surfaces a clear pattern: commercial media tend to skew toward economic framing of climate change, while public broadcasters offer more balanced coverage that incorporates scientific and policy perspectives.

Together with QuotaClimat, the team built the Flemish Climate Media Barometer, a reusable dashboard designed for ongoing monitoring of climate news coverage. At its core is a framing classifier that can be applied continuously to new media output, making the tool a lasting resource for researchers, journalists, and policy advocates alike. By turning complex media analysis into an accessible, visual interface, the Barometer gives civil society and regulators a transparent, evidence-based foundation for holding media accountable for how they shape public understanding of the climate crisis.
